What is the Diversity Visa Lottery?

Every fiscal year approximately 50,000 immigrant visas are up for grabs for a special class of immigrants known as “diversity immigrants.” To be eligible to participate in the program as a “diversity immigrant,” you must be from a country with historically low rates of immigration to the United States. If you were not born in an eligible country, you may qualify to participate in the program if your spouse was born in an eligible country or if your parents were born in an eligible country.

In general, the requirements to participate in the diversity visa program are as follows:

Requirement #2: Each DV applicant must meet the education/work experience requirement of the DV program by having either:

  • at least a high school education or its equivalent, defined as successful completion of a 12-year course of formal elementary and secondary education; OR
  • two years of work experience within the past five years in an occupation that requires at least two years of training or experience to perform. The Department of State will use the U.S. Department of Labor’s O*Net Online database to determine qualifying work experience.

Registration Period

Registration for the DV-2020 program opened on Wednesday, October 3, 2018, and will close on Tuesday, November 6, 2018. You may submit your Electronic Diversity Visa Entry Form (E-DV Entry Form or DS-5501), online at dvlottery.state.gov. There is no fee to enter.

Once you have entered you will receive a unique confirmation number. You will need this confirmation number to access the online system at a later to check the status of your entry by clicking ‘Entrant Status Check.’ Applicants will not be alerted if they have been selected in the lottery. It is the applicant’s responsibility to check the status of their entry to see if they have been selected.
